Hampton County Welcomes Superintendent Dr. Glenda Sheffield — Education

VARNVILLE — The Hampton County School District has a new leader at the helm. Dr. Glenda Sheffield, whose career spans every level of public education, took the reins as Superintendent on November 19, 2024, following a unanimous vote by the Board of Trustees.

Sheffield replaces the previous leadership amid a pivotal moment for the district — one that includes the development of a new high school and the continued expansion of career and technical education programs across the county.

From the Classroom to the Superintendent's Office

Dr. Sheffield is not a newcomer to South Carolina's educational landscape. Before accepting the Hampton County position, she served as Chief Academic Officer in Palm Beach County Schools, one of the largest districts in the nation. Her prior roles include Instructional Superintendent and building-level leadership as both principal and assistant principal at elementary, middle, and high schools.

What She Inherits

The Hampton County School District serves students across nine schools, including Hampton County High School, Estill Middle School, and Ben Hazel Elementary, among others. The district offers Career and Technical Education in Agriculture, Automotive Technology, Building Construction, Culinary Arts, HVAC, and Welding.

The district has also adopted a "Free to Focus" policy regarding cell phones and electronics, intended to reduce distraction in classrooms.

Looking Ahead

Dr. Sheffield's arrival coincides with significant construction planning. The district lists a "New High School" as a priority project. Board meetings are streamed on YouTube: @HamptonCountySchoolDistrict.

The Board Behind Her

The Board of Trustees is chaired by Marsha Robinson and includes Kari Foy, Debra Holmes, Mary Wilson, Douglas Jarrell, Richard Long Jr., and Hannah Priester.
