Freight Trains May Return to Hampton County's Salkehatchie Line

HAMPTON COUNTY — Residents who have wondered about the abandoned rail lines threading through the county's timberland may not have to wonder much longer. Palmetto Railways, a division of the South Carolina Ports Authority, is preparing to resume freight operations on the Salkehatchie Rail Line.
The line, which runs through Hampton County and into Colleton County, has been dormant for years. Its revival would mark one of the most significant infrastructure developments in the region in decades.
What Is the Salkehatchie Line?
The Salkehatchie Rail Line is a freight corridor that historically served the timber, agriculture, and industrial sectors of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Like many rural railroads, it fell into disuse as trucking displaced rail freight for short-haul routes. But rising fuel costs and renewed interest in rail as a lower-emission alternative have made rural freight lines economically viable again.
Palmetto Railways' Role
Palmetto Railways operates under the South Carolina Ports Authority and manages short-line and industrial rail connections throughout the state. Its mandate is to extend port access into inland markets.
Implications for Hampton County
- Reduced shipping costs for farmers and timber operators
- Potential industrial recruitment near rail-served sites
- Infrastructure investment and potential jobs in rail operations
- Increased truck-rail interface at local crossings, affecting traffic in towns like Varnville, Estill, and Hampton
Questions Remaining
A formal timeline has not been publicly announced. Route details and projected volumes remain under development.
